the character.
FULL NAME: Edgar Charles Bones.
NICKNAMES: He was called Eddie when he was younger. When he returned home after first year, he announced that it was too childish. He still hasn't quite managed to shake it, though. Sometimes he gets Ed, as well.
AGE: 30.
DATE OF BIRTH: October 2nd, 1946.
HOUSE: Gryffindor.
POLITICAL AFFILIATION: The Order.
OCCUPATION: Unspeakable.
SEXUALITY: Straight.
FIVE POSITIVE TRAITS: Positivity. Kindness. Common sense. Loyalty. Confidence.
FIVE NEGATIVE TRAITS: Impulsiveness. Reluctance to talk about problems. Moodiness. Sulkiness. Dismissive of beliefs other than his own.
GREATEST FEAR: His family being torn apart, without question.
FULL PERSONALITY: Edgar's bright, friendly, and largely very jovial. He's one of those people who is genuinely a Good Person, almost irritatingly so. His priorities are absolutely in the right place: family above all else, and the Order and their cause comes second. The reason he became part of the Order was not to save the world, it was for his family, because he felt that his children deserved a world better than the one they were getting.
Edgar is probably the loudest and most sociable of his siblings. As a middle child, he wanted to make his presence obvious when he was little, and did so with glee; this tendency to draw attention to himself has remained with him to adulthood, although now it tends to make itself noticed more in the excellent time he always seems to be having and less in the monumental tantrums he often had as a small child. He knows how to make the best out of most situations, and rather than being angry about things he tends to sulk for a while instead. He does have pretty foul, childish sulks that it's hard to shake him out of, which tend to be incredibly annoying for everyone around him. He's perfectly aware that it's a horrible habit and he does try to shake himself out of these sulks, but it's easier said than done.
He's very passionate about what he believes, and this combined with a remarkable amount of intelligence makes for someone who is a very good weapon for the Light side. While he isn't overly extroverted, his loudness does rather disguise his more intellectual side: he got excellent marks when he was at school, he loves reading, and unlike some very energetic people he has the capacity to stay still and relax when he needs to or wants to. He's good at adapting his mood for whatever situation he's in, and can easily go from joking with his brother to being serious with his wife.
IMMEDIATE BIOLOGICAL FAMILY:
MOTHER: Eleanor Bones (deceased).
FATHER: Edward Bones (deceased).
BROTHER: Timothy Bones, his younger brother.
SISTER: Amelia Bones, his younger sister.
SISTER-IN-LAW: Agathe Bones, Timothy's wife.
CHILDREN: Charlie is six. He's a small blond thing with a bad habit of running full tilt into solid objects. Gwen is four, and ridiculously pretty, with a cloud of red hair.
NIECE: Susan Bones. She's absolutely beautiful and Edgar's proud of his younger brother for being such a good father to her.
CHOSEN FAMILY:
WIFE: Sara. He loves her completely and irrationally, and would do absolutely anything in the world to make her happy.
FRIENDS: Despite their differences, his younger brother Timothy is his best friend, without a doubt. However, he's also very close to his younger sister, and very protective of her.
PAST RELATIONSHIPS: He had quite a few girlfriends, some for more than a year, but he never really felt the same about anyone that he does about his wife.
LOYALTY: Towards his family. The reason he's in the Order is to help to create a world that he feels is suitable for his family to live in. He's very, very pro equality between purebloods and those of muggle birth, and would have done his best to marry a Muggleborn to prove his point, except then he accidentally fell in love with a pureblooded woman.
MOTIVATION: To help to create a world that he feels is suitable for his children to grow up in.
DEFINING MOMENT: Like many fathers, the birth of his first child completely changed his life. Charlie Bones' conception was a total surprise and it took him a while to get used to the idea of being a dad. But when he saw his son's face for the first time, everything slotted into place, and made sense, and he knew at once that the aim of his life was going to be to take care of his family, and make sure that everything was as perfect for them as he could make it.
APPEARANCE: Edgar is tall at 6'2. He's built well, with wide shoulders and a narrow waist. He's very fit - he tries to keep healthy, he loves exercise and he actually isn't fond of the taste of unhealthy good, and besides, he spends the vast majority of his time running around after his children. His hair is a mid shade of brown that was blonde when he was little (the same colour as his son's), and his eyes are a pleasant shade of brown. He has full lips that are often twisted into a wry smile. He's amiable and good to talk to, but his expression often tends to make it clear that he's laughing at whoever he's talking to. There isn't much malice in him, but he does take amusement from anything that he can.
HISTORY: Edgar was the first child and first son of Edward and Helen Bones. He was a healthy, robust little boy, with a loud voice and very infectious giggle. He had an younger brother by two years, Timothy, and a younger sister by four years, Amelia. Edgar was always rather louder and more rambunctious than his siblings; as a little boy he was the sort of child who ran determinedly in whatever direction his mother told him not to. Thankfully he grew out of this particular habit (even though, distressingly, his son Charlie appears to have inherited it), and turned out rather nicely. He got on very well with his siblings and often attempted to force them into lots of rowdy games, which admittedly did not always work.
By the time he was eleven, he had turned into a well turned out, polite child who was thrilled about the concept of going to Hogwarts. When he got there, he was sorted into Gryffindor, which no one was particularly surprised about. He loved Gryffindor. He fitted in brilliantly, joined in with all of the loudness and house pride, and was overjoyed two years later when his brother Timothy came to school, even if he was sorted into Ravenclaw, and then when his sister was sorted into Hufflepuff two years after that. He spent as much time as he could with his siblings, and managed to flit from one social group to another. He got good marks in most of his classes, and showed a real aptitude for theoretical subjects like Arithmancy and History of Magic.
In his seventh year, he was made Head Boy. He was really a very good choice for the job: he was capable, mature, and a generally nice boy who respected his peers and did well in all his subjects. The only thing he'd really ever done wrong had been getting caught a couple of times in sixth year with That Buxom Hufflepuff up in the astronomy tower. He was fairly popular - not Marauder level or anything, but he had enough friends. He had an excellent seventh year - he turned out to be a good Head Boy, and he got good marks in all of his NEWTs. For Defence, he learned to duel, and did pretty damn well at it, as well. He has a friend from his year who he continues to practise regularly with. He liked the physicality of it, and the immediacy. It gave him a break from his other subjects, which were not very practical-based at all.
Perhaps a little surprisingly, he joined the Department of Mysteries after he left school. The idea of being an Unspeakable had always rather appealed to him because of his natural sense of curiosity (read: nosiness) and he had always wondered what exactly they did. It was lucky, then, that he enjoyed it once he actually got there. The research into the contents of the Department was exciting and intellectually stimulating, he was never bored, and he felt as though he was doing something that would one day benefit the world, and he has always had lofty aspirations to do just that. Plus it's kind of cool to have his entire working life shrouded in secrecy, he feels like a spy or something.
When he was twenty-five, he met Sara, a twenty-four-year-old Healer. He still maintains that she's the most beautiful girl he'd ever met, and she still maintains that they actually had conversations in school that he doesn't recall so clearly she's not that beautiful after all. They started dating a few months after they became friends, and moved in together two years later. A year later they got engaged, a year after that Sara realised she was pregnant, and a month after that they actually got married. Charlie was born when Edgar was twenty-eight and although he was absolutely terrified at the thought of a child, he now feels as though he was absolutely born to be a father. He's genuinely good with his kids, and he'll parade around for hours on hands and knees pretending to be a horse carrying Gwen around, and do lots of other ridiculous things of that sort with no complaints. Now his younger brother Timothy has a daughter as well, and he's very close to both his family and to Amelia.
His parents were killed in the late seventies. It spurred Edgar on to join the Order; he was absolutely devastated about their deaths. He was angry that his children lost their grandparents and that his parents died before their time. He wanted revenge but common sense took over and prevented him from doing anything too rash. Sara knew, vaguely, about the Order, but he didn't want her to join. In fact, the thought of anyone he knew joining, like Timothy or Amelia or Sara, absolutely paralysed him with fear. He was vaguely aware that he was putting himself in danger but he was pretty sure that he could keep his family out of it, and for him that was the most important thing of all.
He was proved wrong at the end of September, 1980. His family was attacked at home by the Death Eaters to make a point against the Order; as there were too many of them, Edgar was overwhelmed. As he'd told Sara to leave with the children in the hopes that they'd stop at killing him, he died in ignorance that they too would die.

FIRST PERSON JOURNAL ENTRY:
Sara and I have been talking, and we've decided what we're going to do when this war is all over. First, we're going to go on holiday. A long holiday. To somewhere beautiful and sunny. We're not completely sure where exactly yet. We want somewhere unspoilt, without too many annoying tourists, with long white beaches and clear blue oceans. You know, the sort of place with palm trees that you see in catalogues. Where the kids can wade out into the sea and learn to swim in rock pools, and Charlie can find crabs and Gwen can find starfish. They're the most important thing to me. Throughout this entire mess, they're the only things that matter to both me and Sara. Because really, it's all for the kids, isn't it? It's their future that we're fighting for, their world that we want to make beautiful and free of prejudice.
This holiday, it's just a thought, and it probably won't ever actually happen, but it's nice to have something to look forward to.
THIRD PERSON POST:
Edgar was excellent at Arithmancy. He had mastered Apparating on his fourth attempt. At work, he was a leading researcher in some of the most controversial and difficult topics known to the wizarding world. He was intelligent, he knew that, and as such he was absolutely baffled as to the reasons that something as simple as plaiting his daughter's hair was absolutely beyond him. But she was starting daycare soon and Sara was paranoid that she'd get headlice or something awful like that, and sometimes she went out earlier than him in the mornings, therefore apparently it was part of his duties as a loving husband and father to learn to plait his small daughter's hair.
He sighed, and resisted the urge to crack his knuckles. Gwen was sitting in front of him on Sara's stool, swinging her short legs, studying her reflection in the mirror, thumb in her mouth, completely unaware of the pain he was about to accidentally cause her by attempting to twist her hair into a neat plait, which would inevitably end up as a backcombed mess. He hoped that one day she'd be able to forgive him, perhaps when she was nineteen or so.
"Ready, Gwenny?" he asked quietly, stroking a lock of her hair between his fingers. How amazing it was, to feel so much love for one person. It was the same with Charlie; sometimes he was absolutely overwhelmed by being a parent, how terrifying and wonderful it was at once. He really didn't want to make her cry, that would just be the most hideous thing ever. Oh, bloody hell. He stuck his head out of the bedroom door and called down the stairs, "Sara, come and show me how to do this one more time?"
Footsteps and then his wife appeared at the top of the stairs, her mouth twisted into a wry smile. "You're ridiculous. Plaiting hair is probably the easiest thing ever, Ed."
"Yes, but..." He gestured helplessly at Gwen. "I can't. I'll pull all her hair out."
Sara gave him a Look. "Stop being an idiot. Just do it." There was a yelp from downstairs and her eyes widened. "Bugger. Charlie." She fled down the stairs and Edgar half-smiled, before retreating into the bedroom. Gwen was still sitting in front of the mirror, good as gold, and he came up behind her.
She beamed at him and he bent down to press a kiss to the top of her head. "You love Daddy, right, Gwenny?" he asked, and she nodded, still smiling. "Well, I hope you still do after this." He straightened up, and began separating her hair out into three sections. "Here goes."
